The central Florida phosphate mining industry is regulated by DEP and is required to “reclaim” an area after it has been mined. This process involves putting the soil back and contouring it. Then the area must be planted. Many native species like switchgrass have proven to be excellent reclamation plants. Depending on weed cover, sometimes live plant material is used and other times, seed.
